Although they always work together (there can not be one without the other), the actual bond between the signifier and the signified is arbitrary.

In a business context, a semiological approach might be used to A SEMIOLOGICAL APPROACH— explore attendance at meetings, lunch-time rituals or the use of information systems, examining how these systems of signs are interpreted by individuals and groups.
