Please see our.With her range of perfumes and scented candles.From humble beginnings she built an empire before selling the eponymous brand for millions to Estée Lauder in 1999.Later, due to contractual reasons, she was forced into business exile for five years – having also battled cancer.But now, with her new company Jo Loves, she’s back and ready to conquer the world for a second time.And for any budding entrepreneur the Jo Malone story is inspirational.Born in 1963, she grew up in a council house in Bexleyheath, Kent, and struggled academically because she was dyslexic.To me, fragrance is like a kaleidoscope that I can twist to make people experience different things,One distressing early memory involves being made to stand on a chair by a teacher and told: “You will never make anything of your life.”.It instilled a spirit of determination to prove her detractor wrong, which has always stood Jo in good stead.Aged 15, she left school to care for her mother who’d suffered a stroke but by then Jo had already found her passion.She loved creating fragrances by mixing up anything at hand, and recalls using the family’s cheese grater to blend scented soaps.“I had an incredible sense of smell,” Jo says.She started out doing facials for private clients, working from her first flat.Jo would send them home with goody bags containing fragranced bath oils she had concocted on the kitchen table, using spices such as nutmeg and ginger.She founded Jo Malone in 1983 and a shop in fashionable Chelsea followed.Customers flocked to buy her products, attracted by the simplicity of her scents – created using just one or two notes, rather than an overwhelming cocktail of ingredients.In the early days it seemed there was hardly a home in the UK without one of her fragranced candles.Her products gained near cult status and were sought after by celebrities – Sarah, Duchess of York was a fan and her dedicated customers began referring to themselves as “Jo Maloniacs”.Husband Gary gave up his surveying job to help run the business.In 1998 they decided to have a go at the lucrative US market and persuaded a major New York department store to stock her products.But as the launch date approached and with a tiny marketing budget she was worried it might flop.
